Jim Liston loves what he does and lives for the satisfaction of knowing his clients get more than just an arm or a leg—they get a life. For 15 years Jim has been fitting new amputees with state-of-the-art devices, and finding solutions for others who have been barely getting by with poorly fitting or outdated prostheses. Jim welcomes the challenge of getting clients back to doing the things they love.
Phil Stevens, CPO, joined the staff of SPOT in summer 2006 as the Director of Orthotics and Clinical Education. He is a highly skilled practitioner with specialties in pediatric orthotics and cranial remolding. Phil has a tender spot in his heart for his pediatric patients and is dedicated to bringing them to their best level of ability. He recognizes that children are constantly learning and adapting, and that they deserve every chance to attain quality of life.
Prior to joining SPOT, Phil worked for Dynamic Orthotics and Prosthetics L.P., Houston. He is a 2001 graduate of the University of Washington (Seattle) and received his master's degree in allied health education and administration (M.Ed.) from the University of Houston in 2006. He is the winner of the 2006 Graduate Student Research Award by the University of Houston's College of Education.
Craig Armstrong, CP has been with SPOT since the spring of 2003. He comes to us from Shriners Hospital where he worked for 8 years. He has experience with a wide range of amputation levels from the more common below knee amputee to the complex high-level amputee.
Craig is an AK (above knee) amputee and has been one his entire life. He enjoys participating in all sports, many on a competitive level. He loves working with other amputees in helping them achieve their personal goals and overcoming obstacles they may encounter. He definitely has a "can do" attitude and will always encourage other amputees to have the same attitude.
Wendy Remington joined SPOT in July 2007 as a board-eligible prosthetist. She is preparing to sit for the American Board for Certification examination this winter, which will earn her the title of Certified Prosthetist. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology at the University of Utah and studied prosthetics at California State University, Dominguez Hills. While in prosthetics she had a unique opportunity to work with veterans in Long Beach, Calif., in a state-of-the-art gait analysis laboratory. Wendy completed her residency at Shriners Hospital for Children in Salt Lake City, where she treated children ranging from age 4 months to 19 years old. She describes her residency as an exceptionally motivating experience where she had the opportunity to specialize in upper-extremity prosthetics.
Wendy entered the prosthetics profession because she found it a unique and rewarding aspect of health care where she may use creativity to enable individuals to achieve personal goals. Wendy is excited to be a part of the team at SPOT and has enjoyed the change in moving from a large hospital setting to a more intimate, patient-centered facility. Her warm demeanor and varied background make her a welcome addition to our staff.
Melanie Liston has been the financial manager of SPOT since 2002, and also was the interior designer of the new facility, which opened in 2005. Although patients may see Melanie in the office several days a week, she also works from her home office. Melanie is a graduate of the University of Utah, and before joining SPOT, owned her own dance studio. "I'm glad to be involved with SPOT," Melanie said. "I enjoy working with Jim and it's gratifying to see the impact our practitioners have on people's lives."
Melanie and Jim Liston have four children ages 15, 13, 11, and 8.
Steve Gotfredson, lab coordinator, is responsible for maintaining the lab and fabricating prosthetic devices. He is a 2004 graduate of St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minn., where he majored in biomedical science. He joined the staff at Otto Bock HealthCare, first in Minneapolis, and then at Otto Bock's manufacturing and engineering facility in Salt Lake City. Steve has always had in interest in the healthcare field, and his long-term plans include certification in orthotics and prosthetics. Steve enjoys the beauty of the Utah terrain, and is polishing his skiing skills, a sport he learned in his native Minnesota. Steve also likes to snowboard, hike and bike.
Kirsten Muench joined the SPOT staff in June 2005. Prior to moving to Utah 10 years ago, Kirsten worked in education administration while her children where in elementary school. Prior to having children she worked with a large orthopedic practice where she oversaw the surgical scheduling department and back office. She has enjoyed her return to the medical office and looks forward to developing relationships with our patients and helping with their prosthetic needs.
