SPOT Practitioners at Camp Un-Limb-ited

SPOT practitioners Jim Liston, CP, and Craig Armstrong, CP, visited Camp Un-Limb-ited Ski and Snowboard Camp in the Wasatch Mountains to lend support and advice to teens with limb disabilities who were working on skiing and snowboarding skills. Craig, who also happens to be an amputee, has been skiing and racing for more than 10 years.

The Un-Limb-ited Ski and Snowboard Camp, held this year from Jan. 21-25, is staffed by members of physical and recreational therapy, nursing and prosthetics, offering a unique opportunity for twelve young adults with amputations ages 13 to 18,to learn adaptive skiing and snowboarding. Campers receive professional instruction from National Ability Center instructors. Through additional activities, they also had the opportunities to interact with both their peers and staff members. As a group, they explored issues common to teenage amputees while developing skills for future success.

The camp got its beginnings eight years ago when Intermountain Shriners Hospital Physical Therapist Matt Lowell saw a need to give his patients a venue for sports and social activities. He and hospital Child Life Specialist Carolyn Bergquist began a support group with meetings at the hospital, which then evolved into more comprehensive recreational outings. Finally in 2005, the first ski and snowboard camp lasting five days and four nights got underway in Park City. Professional instruction in the sports is provided from National Ability Center instructors.

SPOT also is a Gold Sponsor of the event.
